Curiouser is meant to be a place anyone can settle into, and that goes for the website as much as the rooms. This page sets out what we have done, what we know is not right yet, and how to tell us when we have got it wrong.
What we aim for
We are working towards WCAG 2.1 Level AA, the standard most widely used to judge whether a site is usable by people with disabilities. We are not claiming to have finished; we are claiming to be steering by it.
What we have done
- Every page can be operated by keyboard alone, including the menu, and the focus outline is always visible so you can see where you are.
- The menu button is a real button, announced properly by screen readers, and closes with the Escape key.
- Pages use a single, meaningful heading structure rather than text that merely looks like headings.
- Images that carry meaning have alternative text; images that are purely decorative are hidden from screen readers so they do not add noise.
- Body text is sized and spaced for comfortable reading, with a line length that does not sprawl, and it reflows without breaking when you zoom.
- If your device is set to reduce motion, the site’s animation and smooth scrolling turn off.
- The site works from small phone screens upward.
Where we fall short
Being straight about the gaps is more useful than a clean bill of health:
- Our menu is published as a PDF. We have checked it: it is tagged and its text is selectable, so a screen reader can read it. PDFs are still clumsier than a web page, though, so if it gives you any trouble, call the location and we will happily read the menu to you or send it another way.
- Online ordering and gift cards are handled by Toast, and the embedded maps on our location pages come from Google. Those are third-party services we do not control, and we cannot guarantee their accessibility.
- Some decorative artwork sits behind text. We have kept the contrast high enough to read, but it is busier than a plain background would be.
